Terminals Taking Steps to Speed Trucking Key stakeholders team to implement additional improvements
July 12, 2010
On the eve of the peak shipping season, marine terminals at the Port of Long Beach are adding staff to speed up trucking transactions as cargo volumes have unexpectedly surged.
In addition, key industry stakeholders such as the port authority, terminal operators, trucking companies and importers and exporters have formed a working group to develop other steps to further improve efficiency.
“We have plenty of capacity but the recent jump in cargo volume has occasionally resulted in delays for truckers,” said J. Christopher Lytle, the port’s Deputy Executive Director. “We’ve been looking at solutions and I’m pleased to see the terminals taking steps and working on even more ways to make this the most efficient port complex in the nation.”
The terminals have been adding back the noon hour relief and flex gates to process trucks throughout the day. In addition, the working group will be looking at proposals for a port-wide appointment systems and modifications to the PierPass offpeak truck gates.
